KinsBrae Packaging, a Canadian leader in innovative packaging, has announced a sustainability upgrade for its paper-based KB bottle, designed for wines and spirits.
The company is replacing the bottle’s original metallised PET (MET PET) pouch with a mono-material polyethylene pouch, making it easier to recycle and aligning with Canada’s advanced recycling infrastructure.
The KB bottle, created by British firm Frugalpac, is crafted from 100% recycled paperboard and boasts an 84% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional glass bottles. It recently won the 2024 “Product of the Year” award in the Packaging category. KinsBrae, the first company to install a Frugalpac paper bottle machine in 2023, has addressed recycling concerns by adopting the new pouch, which maintains the same shelf life and durability as its predecessor.
Shawn Bonnick, CEO of KinsBrae Packaging, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “We’re future-proofing the KB bottle by ensuring it remains recyclable as pouch technology advances.” The upgraded pouch will be available in 2025.
The KB bottle is already used by prominent brands like Georgian Bay Spirit Co, Magnotta Winery, and Frisky Beaver, available at the LCBO. Frugalpac’s innovative design is now utilized by 46 brands across 25 countries, including major retailers like Whole Foods and Aldi.
