Billerud has expanded its CrownBoard portfolio with the launch of two new recyclable cartonboard grades designed to meet growing demand for packaging that balances strength, moisture resistance, and sustainability.
The new products, CrownBoard Carry and CrownBoard Light, aim to support brand owners facing both performance pressures and tightening regulations on recyclability. Both grades are made from fresh fibers and are fully recyclable without the use of wet-strength additives, ensuring compliance with upcoming EU rules requiring all packaging to be recyclable by 2030.
“Brand owners and converters are looking for packaging materials that help them reduce carbon footprints, lower EPR fees and meet future recycling regulations,” said Niki Jennische, Senior Director Product Management Cartonboard at Billerud. “This is where our new CrownBoard grades really shine.”
CrownBoard Carry is positioned as Billerud’s strongest cartonboard to date, offering high tear resistance and structural strength for applications such as beverage multipacks. The material also enables lightweighting strategies, helping reduce both material and logistics costs.
CrownBoard Light, meanwhile, is tailored for packaging in cold and moist environments such as freezers and coolers. With inherent wet-strength properties achieved without chemical additives, it maintains durability and visual appeal under challenging conditions.
“With CrownBoard Carry and Light, we’re removing more barriers to the transition toward packaging that is renewable, recyclable and resource-efficient,” Jennische added. “It gives brand owners more tailored options to meet performance demands without compromising on sustainability.”
With the addition of these two grades, the CrownBoard line now includes four distinct options: Carry, Light, Craft, and Prestige—offering converters and brand owners a broader range of solutions to meet specific packaging needs.
Billerud is a leading supplier of renewable packaging materials and solutions. Headquartered in Sweden, the company operates globally with around 6,000 employees, providing fiber-based products that combine performance with sustainability.
