Paper Advancement

Ahlstrom has unveiled an expanded range of sustainable release and label papers for pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) applications, reinforcing its commitment to circularity and lower environmental impact.

The new product lines are being showcased at Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona.

The portfolio features supercalendered release papers designed to cut resource use while maintaining the benefits of Ahlstrom’s Acti-V® technology, which reduces energy, catalyst, and silicone consumption. The company also introduced Acti-V® RF liners, incorporating 15% post-consumer recycled fibers, and Acti-V® RF Natural liners, which contain at least 50% unbleached fibers and 15% recycled fibers. These unbleached compositions provide greater strength at lighter weights while reducing the carbon footprint.

Ahlstrom’s 2024 acquisition of the Stevens Point facility in Wisconsin, USA, has also broadened its PSA offering. The site added complementary capabilities, including UniTherm® label papers for thermal transfer barcode printing and OptiPrime® semi-gloss papers for digital and UV inkjet printing. Some OptiPrime® grades now include up to 30% post-consumer recycled fiber.

“Identifying better material solutions is our ongoing commitment,” said Marco Troglia, Vice President, Release Liners. “Our teams across Europe, the U.S., and Brazil continue to collaborate with customers and suppliers, striving to make the pressure-sensitive industry more sustainable and resilient.”

Beyond PSA applications, Ahlstrom supplies a wide range of liners for tapes, industrial uses, fiber composites, graphics, food, and medical markets. With operations in Europe, North America, and South America, the company is positioning itself to meet rising global demand for sustainable specialty materials.

Ahlstrom is a global leader in fiber-based specialty materials with around 7,000 employees and EUR 3.0 billion in net sales in 2024. The company develops sustainable solutions for packaging, filtration, life sciences, and protective materials, aiming to “Purify and Protect, with Every Fiber, for a Sustainable World.”
