UPM Specialty Papers and Royal Vaassen have joined forces to develop new recyclable, fibre-based barrier paper solutions that provide a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic and aluminum packaging.
The collaboration responds to tightening EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements, as demand grows for packaging compatible with existing recycling infrastructures.
The Barryrwrap concept, created by Royal Vaassen, offers barrier protection ranging from medium to high performance, including resistance to oxygen, moisture, and light. Its flagship product, Barryrwrap Everest, has been designed for instant coffee and other dry goods requiring maximum protection. The recyclable paper structure combines durability with high-quality print reproduction and compatibility with current sealing lines — eliminating the need for conventional aluminum laminates.
UPM contributes with Solide™ Lucent, a dense and smooth packaging paper that forms the base of the Barryrwrap solutions. Its adaptability to different grammages and efficiency on high-speed lines allow for reduced coating needs without sacrificing strength.
“Barryrwrap solutions are a sustainable alternative to laminates and plastics, delivering both performance and circularity,” said Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager at Royal Vaassen. “With Everest, we’ve developed a product that protects contents while being fully recyclable.”
UPM and Royal Vaassen have tested Barryrwrap papers in new applications, including canister-type packaging for chips and drink powders. Sample canisters will be presented at the Fachpack trade fair in Nuremberg from September 23–25, where UPM Specialty Papers experts will showcase the products at Stand 329, Hall 3A.
Safe for food contact and meeting recyclability standards, Barryrwrap and UPM Solide Lucent underline the companies’ commitment to delivering fibre-based solutions that balance sustainability, functionality, and consumer convenience.
