Smurfit Westrock has earned Vegan Society certification for its cardboard packaging range, becoming a preferred supplier for brands seeking fully vegan-certified supply chains.
The certification covers eCommerce boxes, transit cases, shelf-ready packaging (SRP), retail-ready packaging (RRP), and standard cartons—all produced without animal-derived glues, inks, coatings, gelatine, or shellac.
"Packaging should reflect the values of brands and customers who prioritize ethical choices," said Mark Robinson, Markets and Innovation Manager at Smurfit Westrock. The cruelty-free designation also confirms no animal testing in development or manufacturing, appealing to vegan consumers who scrutinize full product lifecycles.
The paper, starch, glue, and inks originate from vegan-conscious suppliers, ensuring supply chain integrity. This aligns with growing demand—85% of UK consumers oppose animal testing in cosmetics, and 40% seek value-aligned businesses—while supporting paperboard's renewable advantages over plastics.
Recent partnerships like McCormack Family Farms demonstrate practical applications, replacing wax-lined trays with recyclable water-resistant coatings that protect produce while advancing sustainability goals. Smurfit Westrock positions vegan certification as part of broader "free-from" packaging strategies including plastic-free and lightweight designs.
Smurfit Westrock is a leading global provider of paper-based packaging solutions, employing around 100,000 people across 40 countries and serving customers worldwide.
