Paper Advancement

Sappi Europe is broadening its recyclable packaging portfolio with the launch of two new high-barrier papers, Guard Pro OHS and Guard Pro OMH.

Both mono-material solutions provide strong product protection while meeting the requirements of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The new grades offer brand owners paper-based alternatives to plastics and multilayer foils without sacrificing speed or efficiency on modern packaging lines. Both will be showcased at FACHPACK 2025 in Nuremberg later this month.

Guard Pro OHS is a heat-sealable, high-barrier paper suitable for flow-wraps, sachets, and pouches. It provides protection against oxygen, water vapor, grease, and MOSH/MOAH, extending shelf life and ensuring product safety. Available in natural and gloss finishes, the paper is designed for direct food contact and complies with toy safety standards, making it versatile for snacks, hygiene items, and children’s products.

Guard Pro OMH offers similar protective properties but is optimized for cold-seal applications. It provides an even stronger oxygen barrier and excellent surface smoothness, enabling high-quality metallization for ultra-high-barrier uses. It is offered in both natural and gloss versions.

“These products help brands meet sustainability goals without compromising performance or efficiency,” said Filip van Ranst, Sales Director at Sappi. “We are giving the market more flexibility and choice when selecting recyclable, high-barrier papers.”

Alongside the new grades, Sappi will showcase other functional barrier innovations from its Guard portfolio, including Guard Duo for ice cream packaging and Guard Twist Gloss, a recyclable, wax-free paper for confectionery.

Sappi’s Guard portfolio is part of the company’s long-term strategy to advance fibre-based, recyclable packaging solutions across food, hygiene, and premium retail markets.

Sappi is a global leader in sustainable woodfibre products, with operations in Europe, North America and Southern Africa. The company produces a wide range of solutions including packaging and speciality papers, graphic papers, dissolving pulp, and biomaterials.
