Mondi has successfully started up a new recycled containerboard machine at its Duino mill in Italy, with Voith serving as full-line technology partner.
The machine came online as planned in April 2025 and is expected to reach an annual capacity of 420,000 tonnes once fully ramped up.
Located in Duino, the rebuilt line significantly expands Mondi’s recycled containerboard offering. The mill’s product range includes waste-based fluting starting at 80 gsm, testliner from 90 gsm upwards, and paper reels from 0.95 m to 3.35 m on Mondi’s widest recycled paper machine.
Voith’s scope covered the entire process, from stock preparation through to the winder section. The project included integrating a BlueLine stock preparation system and converting the existing paper machine into an XcelLine configuration, along with upgrading the winder to improve overall line efficiency and productivity.
Advanced forming, pressing, sizing, and winding technologies were installed to improve runnability, quality consistency, and resource efficiency. Automation and quality control systems were also implemented to stabilize production and support uniform product performance.
According to both companies, the project underscores the benefits of a full-line approach, reducing interface complexity while enabling a timely, efficient start-up. The Duino investment supports Mondi’s strategy to strengthen its sustainable packaging portfolio and increase the use of recycled fibre in containerboard production.
