In a recent article published on its website, Domtar highlighted how it is reinforcing its leadership in the thermal point-of-sale (POS) paper segment — a market central to daily consumer interactions, from grocery receipts to shipping labels.

Through its Domtar POS division, the company has established itself as North America’s only integrated supplier of phenol- and Pergafast-free thermal POS paper and the sole domestic producer of base paper for a wide range of thermal applications.

Domtar’s operations span the full supply chain, from responsibly managed forests to finished rolls of receipt and label paper. Thermal base paper is produced at its Marlboro Mill, then coated at its West Carrollton, Ohio facility, acquired in 2020. Additional converting facilities, including sites integrated in 2024, further process the paper into rolls ready for retail, logistics, and financial applications.

“Being the only domestic producer of thermal POS paper allows us to provide the most reliable supply chain in North America,” said Tina Howard, vice president of sales, converting at Domtar. “Our products go beyond performance, considering both environmental impact and human health.”

A key innovation is Clarion™ POS paper, the first phenol- and Pergafast-free thermal paper on the market. Recyclable and sustainably produced, it addresses both regulatory pressures and consumer expectations for safer materials.

Domtar also plays an advocacy role through organizations such as the Paper Receipts Converting Association (PRCA) and the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). A 2023 PRCA survey showed that 85 percent of American consumers want the option of paper receipts, with 73 percent preferring them over digital — particularly younger consumers concerned with privacy.

By investing in technology, expanding its converting capabilities, and advocating for consumer choice, Domtar positions itself as a key voice in shaping the future of thermal POS paper while ensuring sustainable and reliable supply for North America.

Domtar is a leading North American producer of pulp, paper, and wood products. With operations in Canada and the United States, the company employs thousands of people and focuses on sustainability, innovation, and long-term partnerships with its customers.
