Georgia-Pacific announced an $800 million investment to modernize and expand its Alabama River Cellulose mill in Perdue Hill.

The project, beginning in late 2025 and concluding in 2027, will add new technology, including a digester, pulp dryer, and power boiler, while upgrading existing systems.

The expansion is expected to increase the mill’s capacity by about 300 tons per day, bringing annual production close to one million tons of fluff and market pulps. These materials are used in products such as diapers, tissue, and food packaging.

Upgrades will also target improved environmental performance through reduced water use, lower emissions, and more efficient energy and biomass utilization. Once completed, the Alabama River Cellulose mill will be among the largest and most advanced softwood pulp facilities in the United States.

Georgia-Pacific has invested over $700 million in the site since acquiring it in 2010, bringing its total commitments in Alabama to more than $2.5 billion. The company employs about 2,400 people across the state, with the Perdue Hill mill providing more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Georgia-Pacific is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, packaging, and building products. Headquartered in Atlanta, the company operates more than 150 facilities in North America, including six in Alabama. Its cellulose business supplies fluff and market pulps used in a wide range of consumer goods, from tissue and hygiene products to packaging materials.
