Pixelle Specialty Solutions has announced the planned closure of its Chillicothe, Ohio, paper mill, impacting approximately 800 employees.

The decision is part of a broader strategic shift to concentrate on high-demand specialty paper markets and streamline the company’s operational footprint.

“This was an extremely difficult decision,” said Ross Bushnell, Pixelle’s president and CEO. “We value our Chillicothe team and the contributions they’ve made to Pixelle. Our priority is to support them with care and transparency throughout this transition.”

Production will be consolidated at Pixelle’s Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, and Fremont, Ohio, facilities. Key product lines, including carbonless sheet and Defensa paper, will be relocated to Spring Grove to ensure continuity and maintain quality standards. The Chillicothe mill is expected to wind down operations in the coming weeks.

Pixelle is coordinating closely with union leadership under existing collective bargaining agreements and has committed to offering job placement assistance and workforce resources for affected employees.

“This move allows us to better align our resources with growth opportunities and continue delivering high-quality specialty paper solutions,” Bushnell added.

The closure marks the latest in a series of strategic moves for Pixelle, which recently divested its Stevens Point, Wisconsin, mill to Ahlstrom. The company is focusing on its core portfolio, which includes food packaging, label facestock, and security papers, serving customers such as Hallmark and 3M.

Headquartered in Spring Grove, Pixelle is one of North America’s leading specialty paper manufacturers. Its shift toward a leaner, more focused operation reflects growing industry demand for specialized, sustainable solutions and the need to adapt in a rapidly evolving market.
