Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM) has unveiled a new Enhanced Freezer Application for its Kallima® folding carton board, designed to meet the specific demands of frozen food packaging while advancing sustainability and performance.
Developed at RYAM’s Temiscaming, Quebec facility, the new grade enhancement reinforces Kallima’s reputation as a reliable and cost-effective solution for converters and brand owners. The board is engineered to withstand temperatures as low as -18°C (0°F) while maintaining its strength and resisting delamination—essential qualities for packaging exposed to freezer and cold-chain environments.
Unlike conventional freezer-grade boards that require coatings or plastic extrusion, RYAM’s solution performs naturally against moisture and condensation. This eliminates added treatments, simplifying conversion and reducing production costs.
“Our Enhanced Freezer Application is a direct response to customer needs,” said Ken Duffy, Senior Vice President, Paperboard and High Yield Pulp at RYAM. “It empowers converters with a freezer-ready solution that performs reliably while remaining easy to convert—helping brands stay competitive without adding production complexity.”
The upgraded Kallima board also supports high-quality printing for retail visibility, making it suitable for a wide range of frozen food packaging—from ready meals to protein trays. Manufactured from responsibly sourced, certified forest fiber, it combines durability with environmental responsibility, aligning with brand owners’ growing focus on sustainable materials.
The announcement comes amid continued global growth in the frozen food market, driven by demand for convenience and longer shelf life. With this enhancement, RYAM aims to strengthen its position in the packaging sector by providing converters with a freezer-ready, fiber-based alternative to plastic-coated materials.
