Sabert Expands Fibre-Based Packaging With PULPUltra™

PULPUltra™, from Sabert Corporation Europe is a game changing next-generation, no-intentionally-added-PFAS foodservice packaging solution.

Paper Advancement

Sabert Corporation Europe has launched PULPUltra™, a new fibre-based food packaging solution designed to combine high performance with compliance with evolving European regulations on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Already introduced in Ireland for children’s meal packaging and in France within the Gastronorme range, PULPUltra™ is now being rolled out across Europe and the UK & Ireland. The product is based on a formulation with no intentionally added PFAS, addressing both legislative requirements and foodservice performance needs.

According to Sabert, PULPUltra™ is made from more than 95% bagasse fibres and treated with a barrier spray coating of less than 5%. The company says the material delivers strong oil and grease resistance in direct-contact hot food applications, while avoiding laminated structures commonly used in comparable products.

The packaging is suitable for fresh, ready-to-eat and hot food applications and is designed to perform across a wide range of uses, including freezing, microwave and conventional oven heating, and high-speed foodservice equipment. It can also be sealed using single PET sealing or multi-welding processes.

From a sustainability and compliance perspective, PULPUltra™ is recyclable under the UK’s Recycling Assessment Methodology (RAM), compliant with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and certified TÜV OK Compost Industrial. Sabert said certification for home compostability is expected to follow.

The launch comes as the EU prepares to introduce stricter controls on PFAS under Regulation (EU) No 40/2025, which will limit the presence of these substances in food-contact packaging from August 2026. Sabert positions PULPUltra™ as a solution that allows customers to anticipate these regulatory changes.

At launch, the product received a National Silver Award in the Paper & Packaging category at the Green Apple Awards, recognising innovation in environmentally responsible packaging.

Sabert said the introduction of PULPUltra™ reflects a broader transition of its pulp-based portfolio toward home-compostable and regulation-ready solutions, as foodservice operators and brand owners reassess material choices under tightening sustainability and chemical safety rules.
