In a recent article published on its website, Domtar highlighted how artificial intelligence is transforming its sawmill operations.
By combining machine learning with human expertise, the company is improving quality, efficiency, and sustainability.
Over the past two years, Domtar has implemented AI modeling at its facilities in Glenwood, Arkansas; Cross City, Florida; Thunder Bay and Atikokan in Ontario; and Normandin, La Doré and Senneterre in Quebec. The technology allows mills to meet precise customer specifications while reducing waste and streamlining operations.
“AI allows us to be more precise and consistent. There’s a lot less waste,” said Carl Lévêque, quality superintendent for Domtar’s Wood Products business unit.
How AI transforms sawmilling
At the planer mill, boards are scanned and photographed from multiple angles. AI models analyze composition and detect inconsistencies such as separations, discoloration, or insect damage that would be invisible to the human eye. This process, once labor-intensive and prone to error, now takes seconds and delivers consistent results.
Each Domtar mill produces numerous lumber products with strict quality standards. AI ensures every board meets both building codes and customer specifications, applying uniform standards across all output.
Human expertise remains vital
While AI enhances speed and accuracy, human oversight remains central. Engineers and technicians train the models by tagging defects and running field tests to align machine assessments with specifications. If a model mistakenly flags wood as defective, employees collaborate with suppliers to fine-tune the system.
By integrating AI modeling into its sawmills, Domtar is extending the use of each tree while reducing waste and increasing operational consistency. The company’s approach highlights how artificial intelligence can complement human expertise in the wood products sector.
Domtar is a leading North American producer of pulp, paper, and wood products. With operations in Canada and the United States, the company employs thousands of people and focuses on sustainability, innovation, and long-term partnerships with its customers.
