Twin Rivers Paper Company is celebrating a century of papermaking, marking 100 years of production, innovation, and community engagement.

The company’s roots date back to 1925, when the first tons of paper rolled off two machines at its Madawaska mill in northern Maine. Today, Twin Rivers operates seven paper machines across four sites: the flagship Madawaska facility, three specialty mills in upstate New York, and an integrated pulp mill in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Together, these operations produce more than 400,000 tons of specialty papers annually, serving diverse markets from packaging and publishing to pharmaceuticals and labeling.

The Madawaska mill remains central to Twin Rivers’ operations, with four paper machines producing over 340,000 tons each year. Products include oil- and grease-resistant food packaging, coated-one-side grades, lightweight opaque publishing papers, release liners, and label base papers. Across the St. John River, the Edmundston pulp mill—established in 1916—supplies pulp and energy, with a pipeline delivering steam to the Madawaska site since 1975. Sustainability initiatives were strengthened in 1997 with the addition of a 45-megawatt biomass co-generation facility that now covers more than half of the site’s energy needs.

Expansion came in 2016 with the acquisition of Burrows Paper Corp., which brought three New York mills—Mill Street, Mohawk Valley, and Lyons Falls—into the Twin Rivers network. These sites produce base papers for waxing, laminating, and extrusion, as well as grades for batteries, medical uses, filtration, and hydroentangling. Burrows Paper itself traces its history back to 1919 in Little Falls, New York.

“Twin Rivers’ 100-year milestone is a tribute to generations of employees who have been instrumental in the company’s growth and success through the years,” said CEO Tyler Rajeski. “We are proud of our team’s dedication to operational excellence and innovation, and we are grateful for the continued support of our customers, suppliers, and communities.”

As Twin Rivers looks ahead, the company emphasizes its commitment to investing in operations, employees, and local communities, reinforcing its position in the specialty paper sector for decades to come.
