International Paper will close two packaging facilities in Compton, California, and Louisville, Kentucky, as part of its strategy to streamline its North American footprint.

The company announced that both sites will cease operations by January 2026, with customer orders redirected to nearby locations.

The closures will affect 125 employees in Compton and 93 in Louisville. International Paper stated that it will work to reduce the impact through attrition, retirements and open positions at other company sites. Affected employees will receive outplacement services, mental health support and severance packages.

“Making the decision to close a facility is incredibly difficult, especially knowing the impact it has on our team members and their families,” said Tom Hamic, executive vice president and president of North American Packaging Solutions at International Paper. “We are sincerely grateful for the contributions of our departing team members, and we are fully committed to supporting them through this transition.”

The company described the closures as part of a broader transformation plan aimed at strengthening its position as a sustainable packaging solutions provider. Consolidating its manufacturing footprint, International Paper said, will help focus investments on facilities that can best support quality, reliability and service improvements across its network.

International Paper is a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions. Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, with EMEA operations based in London, the company employs more than 65,000 people across over 30 countries. In 2025, International Paper acquired DS Smith, expanding its presence in the North American and EMEA markets. The company reported $18.6 billion in net sales in 2024.
