Suzano’s biomass gasification project in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil, has been recognized by two global organizations during COP30.

The technology was selected by the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) as a concrete example of innovation supporting the climate transition.

The project converts biomass into synthesis gas (syngas) used to fuel lime kilns, replacing petroleum-derived fuel oil. This shift marks a new energy model for the pulp and paper sector. The plant has reduced fossil fuel consumption by 97% and cut energy costs for lime kilns by more than 82%, delivering significant climate and operational benefits.

Suzano’s case study was chosen as one of 48 global examples to be highlighted by SB COP at COP30. It was selected from a pool of 670 initiatives analyzed by the coalition. WBCSD also included the project in its Business Action Bank, a database of effective climate solutions designed to inspire broader change across industries.

“The sector and the world are seeking sustainable solutions to climate change, and Suzano, with its Climate Transition Action Plan, seeks to contribute with effective mitigation actions,” said Maurício Miranda, Suzano’s industrial director for the southern pulp operations. “Presenting our solutions, which not only reduce costs and CO₂ emissions but also eliminate dependence on fossil fuels, shows that it is possible to do things differently and better.”

Suzano executives will participate in multiple panels during COP30 to discuss the company’s climate strategies and to present further case studies that demonstrate measurable results across its operations.

Suzano is a large producer of market pulp and a major supplier of renewable, fiber-based materials. The company operates across Brazil, exports to more than 100 countries and focuses on climate innovation, responsible forest management and low-carbon industrial technologies. Suzano employs over 17,000 people worldwide.
