Billerud has secured SBTi approval for its plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The validation confirms the alignment of its long-term target with climate science and with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The commitment is clear. Billerud will cut emissions from its operations and value chain by 90%. The plan covers raw materials, energy, production, transport, product use, and end-of-life. The company will balance the remaining residual emissions with carbon removals.
“Our commitment is strong,” said Veronica Stigsson, Acting EVP Sustainability & Public Affairs. “The SBTi approval shows that we are on the right track, both for our long-term ambition and our near-term goals.”
The validation builds on the near-term science-based targets approved in 2024. Billerud aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, using 2022 as the baseline year. Progress has been significant. In 2024, the company cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 337 ktons, reaching 78% of the reductions needed to meet the 2030 target.
“These achievements show our credibility and transparency,” Stigsson added. “They also strengthen trust with our customers.”
Billerud has developed roadmaps for its European and North American operations. The plans detail how the company will continue to reduce long-term Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and support its pathway to net-zero.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) helps companies and financial institutions set emissions-reduction targets that align with climate science and global climate goals.
