The Environmental Paper Assessment Tool (EPAT) has released Version 4.2, enhancing its position as a leading platform for evaluating the environmental and social performance of paper and packaging supply chains.
The latest update introduces new and refined indicators that align with evolving global sustainability standards, helping buyers and suppliers strengthen responsible sourcing practices.
Key Enhancements in EPAT 4.2
EUDR Compliance: A new KPI assesses supplier alignment with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which requires paper and wood products sold in the EU to be deforestation-free and legally produced. Scoring reflects progress from basic traceability to full third-party verified compliance.
Business Ethics: A new ethics indicator enables suppliers to demonstrate anti-corruption policies, transparency measures, and governance systems verified by third parties, fostering accountability and trust across the supply chain.
Labor and Human Rights: Updated criteria now align with ILO Core Conventions and ISO 26000, offering a clearer framework to assess worker engagement, grievance mechanisms, and verified compliance audits.
Advancing Transparency
For nearly two decades, EPAT has provided a consistent framework of more than 30 indicators for assessing suppliers’ sustainability performance. With Version 4.2, the platform deepens its focus on transparency, social responsibility, and regulatory compliance.
“As global sustainability frameworks evolve, EPAT ensures buyers of paper-based products have access to the most relevant data,” said Phil Riebel, President of the Sustainable Paper Group. “Version 4.2 empowers stakeholders to make more informed, responsible purchasing decisions.”
The Environmental Paper Assessment Tool (EPAT) is a web-based platform enabling buyers to evaluate the environmental and social impacts of paper and packaging supply chains.
