As global trade and e-commerce reshape supply chains, Mercer International is leveraging container logistics to efficiently deliver its pulp products across the globe, the company shared in a recent release.
In 2024 alone, Mercer shipped around 10,000 containers from Hamburg to key markets worldwide.
At the core of these operations is Mercer’s Hamburg-based logistics team, coordinating container exports from its Stendal and Rosenthal mills. Freight forwarders Harm Hastedt and Arne Anderson oversee contract negotiations, partner selection, and long-haul freight planning — often across 18,000-kilometer routes.
With stagnating demand in Europe and rising interest in markets like China, containerized shipping offers Mercer speed, efficiency, and flexibility. The company is also shifting toward rail transport and working with hubs like ElbePort Wittenberge to streamline delivery and reduce road traffic.
CEO Juan Carlos Bueno recently praised the logistics team for their adaptability and commitment, emphasizing their essential role in supporting Mercer’s global leadership in sustainable wood-based products.
Mercer International is a global leader in the production of bio-based products made from wood, including pulp, energy, and lumber. With operations in North America and Europe, the company serves markets worldwide with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence. Mercer’s integrated production model and commitment to responsible forestry make it a key player in the transition to a circular, low-carbon economy.
