Södra’s Biomass Power Surplus Fuels 50,000 Homes

Power and Energy

In 2024, Södra reinforced its position as a major producer of biomass-based green electricity, generating more power than it consumed and helping to drive Sweden’s energy transition.

The group produced a total of 1,682 GWh of electricity—mainly from biomass, along with wind and hydropower—exceeding its internal consumption by more than 20 percent.

The resulting surplus of 272 GWh was delivered to the national grid—enough to meet the annual electricity needs of over 50,000 Swedish family homes, or power 120,000 electric vehicles for a year.

The foundation of this surplus lies in Södra’s three pulp mills, where steam from biomass-based processes powers turbines to generate electricity. This circular approach allows Södra not only to meet its own energy demands but also to support surrounding communities with stable, renewable energy.

Beyond electricity, Södra also delivered district heating equivalent to the needs of 30,000 homes, primarily by harnessing residual heat from its pulp production processes—another example of resource optimization in action.

With its integrated model combining sustainable forestry, biomass energy, and technical innovation, Södra continues to play a key role in strengthening the energy infrastructure of southern Sweden—supporting both industrial performance and the broader energy transition.

Södra is a leading Swedish forest industry group owned by over 50,000 forest owners. It produces high-quality wood products, pulp, and bio-based energy, with a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and long-term partnerships in global markets.
