At GP Cellulose, the safety and well-being of our employees and communities is our first priority.
Our approach is to use best knowledge, employee know-how, and innovation to operate in a responsible way. Leading this charge at our Leaf River Mill is Morgan Baker, whose innovative leadership and engineering expertise are helping to shape a safety-first culture. With a background in mechanical engineering and a dedication to building trust and collaboration, Morgan helps GP Cellulose employees at Leaf River gain the tools and confidence needed to help create a safer workspace. Her work is exemplary of the capabilities we have developed in our employees and in our systems to prevent serious incidents.
Driving Safety Through Collaboration
In her role, Morgan leads efforts to build systems that manage workplace risks and implement controls to prevent incidents. Her approach is rooted in teamwork, working closely with the mill’s workforce to address and mitigate safety concerns. She prioritizes strong personal relationships, ensuring that employees feel empowered to raise concerns and ask questions.
One way she has fostered collaboration is by encouraging the development of shift safety leaders, or “game changers,” who address safety issues in real-time. These leaders act as essential resources, reinforcing a safety-first mindset. This is a prime example of our focus on individuals and bottom-up solutions rather than top-down imperatives, as outlined in our Stewardship Framework.
Morgan finds the most rewarding part of her role is witnessing the workforce at the mill take ownership of safety. When team members identify risks they hadn’t recognized before and then work together to develop effective solutions, it showcases the power of teamwork. For Morgan, these moments represent a collective commitment to creating a safer work environment and highlight the positive impact of shared responsibility in driving continuous improvement.
From Engineering to Safety Leadership
Growing up on a farm in South Mississippi, Morgan developed a strong work ethic and a curiosity about how things worked. She was especially inspired by her close relationship with her aunt, an engineer, who introduced her to the possibilities of the field. This sparked her passion for engineering and set her on a path of academic and professional success.
Morgan earned admission to Princeton University, where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering—a remarkable achievement that highlighted her ambition and talent. Following her time at Princeton, she returned closer to home to further her studies, completing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Mississippi State University.
Morgan joined GP Cellulose in November 2022 as a Process Safety Engineer at the Leaf River Mill. Demonstrating a deep commitment to her role and a talent for leadership, she advanced to the position of Safety Manager by March 2024. Her career progression reflects both her dedication and her drive to make a lasting impact on workplace safety.
Beyond the Workplace
Morgan’s life beyond the mill is deeply rooted in her passion for barrel racing—a thrilling and highly competitive equestrian sport that holds profound significance for her and her family. Her family not only competes but also raises horses specifically for barrel racing, a process that requires exceptional care, patience, and expertise. This dedication reflects values that resonate with Morgan in every aspect of her life, from her professional role to her personal pursuits.
Focused on Making a Difference
Each day, Morgan is guided by one simple yet profound question — how do we help ensure that everyone goes home the same way they showed up to work? “Everyone comes to work with a purpose—whether it’s supporting their family, pursuing personal passions, or contributing to something greater. As a safety leader, my priority is to foster a safe and healthy work environment, ensuring that every person returns home safely to the people that matter most,” said Morgan. Her ability to combine technical knowledge with genuine care for her team reflects the values of GP Cellulose and makes her an invaluable part of our team. Morgan and other safety leaders across GP Cellulose help ensure our employees prioritize the health and safety of one another and our communities, comply with all laws and regulations, and practice a philosophy of mutual benefit.
