Georgia-Pacific announced plans to permanently close its corrugated packaging plant in Mt. Olive, Illinois, by December 31, 2025.
The company informed employees that operations will continue over the next 60 days before a safe and orderly shutdown. Approximately 134 employees will be affected.
The company emphasized that the decision reflects long-term competitiveness challenges at this location rather than employees’ performance. Georgia-Pacific is working to support affected workers by exploring potential roles within other Georgia-Pacific or Koch companies, and by connecting them with job fairs and external employment opportunities. Hourly employees at the facility are represented by the United Steelworkers union, and negotiations on the closure’s effects will follow the current contract.
Located at 900 S. Route 66, the Mt. Olive plant has long been a key local employer. Georgia-Pacific said it will determine the future of the property after vacating the site. During the shutdown period, the company’s focus will remain on safe operations and supporting employees through the transition.
The closure aligns with industry-wide consolidation trends as manufacturers adapt to evolving market conditions. Georgia-Pacific has announced several site closures in 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to maintain competitiveness while managing workforce impacts responsibly.
The company expressed appreciation for Mt. Olive employees’ dedication and contributions over the years and reaffirmed its commitment to treating workers with respect throughout the process.
