Norske Skog has officially launched containerboard production at its Golbey mill, marking the largest single investment in the company’s history and a transformative step in its business strategy.
The EUR 400 million project adds 550,000 tonnes of annual containerboard capacity and positions Golbey as one of Europe’s largest paper and packaging production sites.
The newly commissioned machine is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated entirely to recycled containerboard. Combined with its existing newsprint production, the Golbey mill now boasts a total annual output of 880,000 tonnes—550,000 of containerboard and 330,000 of newsprint.
“This is a significant milestone for Norske Skog and for everyone working at the Golbey mill,” said CEO Geir Drangsland. “The containerboard business will become a strong contributor to our operations while we remain a reliable supplier of high-quality publication papers.”
Containerboard deliveries are set to begin in Q2 2025. The company anticipates reaching 50–60% capacity utilisation by year-end, ramping up to 95% by mid-2027.
Beyond expanding product capacity, the Golbey mill will play a key role in regional sustainability. It will sort and recycle over one million tonnes of wastepaper annually, and partner with Green Valley Energie to convert waste into green energy. This supports both the mill’s environmental goals and cost competitiveness.
“With the growing demand for renewable packaging, our recycled containerboard line is ideally timed,” said Yves Bailly, Managing Director of Norske Skog Golbey. “This will create long-term value for our stakeholders and reinforce our leadership in sustainable packaging.”
At full production, Golbey is expected to generate around NOK 5 billion in annual revenue by 2027/28, reflecting strong market demand in both packaging and publication paper sectors.
Norske Skog now has a total containerboard capacity of 760,000 tonnes, solidifying its role as a leading independent supplier of recycled containerboard in Europe.
Norske Skog is a leading European producer of publication paper and recycled packaging, operating four high-performance industrial sites. Headquartered in Norway and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange, the company employs around 1,700 people and is focused on transforming into high-margin, sustainable markets through strategic development and investment.
