Saica Group announced that its Saica Flex plant in Wigan has become the first flexible packaging facility in the UK to be awarded the company’s Zero to Landfill Certificate.

The site achieved a 99.82% waste diversion rate in its audit, surpassing the 95% threshold required for certification.

The audit process covered six consecutive months of operations, during which the Wigan site handled 400 tonnes of waste. No major or minor deviations were recorded. The evaluation included waste management practices, compliance with updated UK waste legislation, and the infrastructure support provided by Saica Natur, the group’s environmental services division.

“This demonstrates Saica Group’s commitment to the environment and pioneering efforts to remain at the forefront of innovation in the industry,” said Andy Salisbury, Plant Director of Saica Flex Wigan.

Jim Malone, UK Saica Natur Country Manager, added: “We are proud to provide our customer with the required knowledge and techniques to ensure this achievement.”

The certification requires annual performance reviews and a full review every three years, ensuring continued accountability and improvement.

By reaching this milestone, Saica Flex Wigan aligns with the UK government’s net zero goals and sets a benchmark for the flexible packaging industry. The recognition highlights both Saica’s environmental responsibility and the role of circular economy practices in reducing landfill dependency.

The Saica Group provides sustainable paper and packaging solutions, promoting circularity in waste management. With more than 12,000 employees across Europe and the United States, the company operates four business divisions: Saica Paper, Saica Natur, Saica Pack, and Saica Flex. The group reported consolidated sales of €3,662 million in 2024.
