The UK Government has announced an increase in support for energy-intensive industries, including papermaking, through its Supercharger scheme.
From October 2025, rebates on network-related electricity costs for paper mills in the program will rise from 60% to 90%, bringing UK industry costs closer to those of European competitors such as Germany.
The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) welcomed the move, noting that high electricity costs have long challenged UK manufacturers competing globally.
“This policy decision is a step in the right direction,” said Alex Veitch, CPI Chief Executive Officer. “Our members need government to set a clear path toward internationally competitive energy prices to sustain jobs and investment.”
The paper industry contributes roughly £15 billion annually to the UK economy and supports more than 115,000 direct and indirect jobs. The enhanced Supercharger scheme is part of a broader effort to strengthen domestic manufacturing competitiveness.
