Port Hawkesbury Paper (PHP) has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, showcasing a year marked by safety milestones, renewable energy progress, product innovation, and continued commitment to sustainable forestry.
Record Safety Performance
In 2024, PHP achieved its lowest recordable incident rate to date, at 0.64. The company attributes this to improved training, new technologies, and a strong workplace safety culture.
Renewable Energy and Economic Growth
A central highlight of the report is the Goose Harbour Lake Wind Farm project. Securing $450 million in financing, the initiative is expected to provide more than 60% of the mill’s power needs. Developed in partnership with Indigenous communities, the project advances both provincial climate goals and local economic development.
Innovation in Paper Grades
PHP introduced two new products—Altitude and Elevation Book and Offset—expanding its premium paper offering. These launches are aimed at reinforcing the company’s market presence amid challenging industry conditions.
Commitment to Forestry Stewardship
The report also underscores PHP’s adherence to rigorous forestry standards. The mill maintains certification with the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC-C112699), Sustainable Forestry Initiative®, and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, ensuring sustainable forest management practices.

“This past year was about building a company that is sustainable and looking toward the future,” said Bevan Lock, Mill Co-Manager of Port Hawkesbury Paper. “Thanks to our ownership, employees, customers, and community, we have taken tangible steps toward a sustainable future.
