International Paper has broken ground on a new state-of-the-art packaging facility in Waterloo, Iowa, marking a key investment in the company’s sustainable growth strategy and its presence in the Midwest.
The Memphis-based global packaging leader announced that the facility will primarily serve the protein segment, offering tailored, eco-friendly solutions to meet rising demand. Designed with advanced technology and best-in-class safety features, the plant aims to set new standards in sustainable packaging.

Scheduled to begin operations in Q4 2026, the plant is expected to create 65 new jobs, bringing the total number of employees in the Waterloo area to approximately 190. The project highlights International Paper’s commitment to regional economic development and sustainable innovation.
Following its recent acquisition of DS Smith, International Paper now employs over 65,000 people in more than 30 countries. With 2024 net sales reaching $18.6 billion, the company continues to strengthen its leadership across North America and EMEA in renewable and responsible packaging solutions.
