Greif Inc. announced today that it will permanently close its Los Angeles paperboard mill in June 2025, marking the end of its coated recycled paperboard (CRB) production on the U.S. West Coast.

The decision is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to optimize its operations.

The Los Angeles mill currently produces both coated and uncoated recycled paperboard (URB). Its closure will remove approximately 50,000 tons of CRB and 22,000 tons of URB capacity from the market.

“This was not an easy decision, especially considering its impact on our team members, their families, and the community,” said Ole Rosgaard, President and CEO of Greif. “We are deeply grateful for the dedication of our Los Angeles colleagues and are committed to providing support, including severance and career transition assistance.”

In total, 72 positions will be affected. The company cites increased operational costs and limited integration opportunities as the main reasons for the closure.

Rosgaard emphasized that the move is aligned with Greif’s long-term strategy: “This is a strategic decision intended to strengthen our focus in key markets while enhancing the performance of our mill network and broader portfolio.”
