Metsä Board officially ceased production at its Tako cartonboard mill in Tampere (Finland) on June 17, 2025, with the shutdown of board machine BM1 marking the end of operations.
The closure, announced in March, is part of the company’s strategy to improve long-term profitability and competitiveness.
To support the 191 employees affected by the closure, Metsä Board implemented a career transition program. This included internal job fairs across other Metsä Board facilities, partnerships with employment authorities, and training sessions. By the closure date, 95 employees had already secured new positions.
“This was a difficult decision, and we’ve done everything possible to support our personnel during the transition,” said Timo Ahonen, Vice President of the Tako mill. “The team spirit at Tako remained strong until the very end.”
Production of Tako’s grades has been successfully transferred to Metsä Board’s Kyro mill, ensuring continued service to customers.
Cleanup and dismantling preparations have begun at the site. Machine removal is planned for 2026, following a drainage and cleaning phase running through the end of 2025. A permit application for dismantling external facilities has also been submitted. The long-term future of the site remains undetermined.
Metsä Board, a specialist in lightweight fresh fibre cartonboard, employs around 2,300 people and aims to make all its mills and raw materials fossil-free by 2030.
