Norske Skog has completed the formal takeover of the new containerboard machine PM1 at its Golbey mill in France, confirming the company’s strategic move into packaging paper production.
The recycled containerboard line, now entering commercial operation, marks an important stage in Norske Skog’s industrial transformation. Full utilisation is expected during the first half of 2027.
“This achievement reflects strong teamwork across Norske Skog,” said CEO Geir Drangsland. “With Golbey PM1, we can now serve customers on a commercial scale and strengthen our position in the European containerboard market.”
Although ramp-up costs weighed on profitability in the third quarter, the company said the project continues to develop as planned. Lower fibre and energy costs are expected to improve competitiveness in the quarters ahead.
The Golbey PM1 investment is part of Norske Skog’s broader strategy to balance its traditional publication paper operations with growing demand for recycled packaging grades. The company also operates a containerboard line in Bruck, Austria, and continues to invest in efficiency and cost-reduction measures across its European mills.
Norske Skog is a European producer of packaging paper and publication paper, operating four mills across the continent. Its packaging portfolio includes recycled containerboard grades such as testliner and fluting, while publication paper production covers newsprint and magazine paper. The group employs about 1,700 people, with its parent company, Norske Skog ASA, headquartered in Oslo and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under the ticker NSKOG.
