TAPPICon 2023 was held earlier this year in Atlanta, Georgia from April 22-26.

This year, Fisher International’s Nancy Hasson, Director of Business Intelligence Consulting, facilitated the State of the Industry panel as Session Chair.

Among the panelists was ResourceWise’s North American Sales Manager Laura Beacham. Her presentation was entitled “Key Issues and Trends in Today’s Pulp, Paper and Tissue Industry.”

Laura shared insights from Fisher International’s ‘State of the Industry’ report – an analysis on the current state and future of the global pulp and paper industry.

The report breaks down and details capacity trends, mergers and acquisitions, impactful economic and societal factors, new investments and technological advancements in North America, Asia Pacific and Europe. It also covers each region’s current ESG standing and policies along with any upcoming legislation that could have an impact on its pulp and paper market.

Critical Questions Regarding the Current Pulp and Paper Industry

With purchase of the report, your organization can gain access to sought-after answers to some of the most crucial questions circling the industry. Some of these questions include:

1. Is the global pulp and paper industry growing or declining? At what rate?

Insight into the direction in which the industry is heading is one of the fundamental understandings every paper industry producer, supplier and investor should have a solid grasp on. By diving into the overall trajectory of the pulp and paper market, you can analyze the factors pushing it along its path as well as those fighting against it.

Once you have the answer to this question, you can then evaluate your company’s opportunities and risk. Not only that, but you can also better forecast your future growth and plan for evolving industry dynamics.

2. Which major grades are leading the pack and which ones are declining, and how fast? Will we likely find the same answer in 5 years?

Knowing which grades are in higher demand than others, along with which grades are being invested in by other producers, is critical. This can help provide insight into the best strategy for future investments.

With this insight comes additional questions, such as:

  • Which segment is growing the fastest, and why?
  • Which region is experiencing the most added capacity for each major grade?
  • What legislation, societal or economic factors are influencing this movement
  • Should we still invest in the declining segments?

3. Will increased renewable fuel incentives, such as sustainable aviation fuel, create risks or opportunities for the pulp and paper industry?

Most Fortune 100 companies have set some sort of carbon reduction goal. Many of these goals are to achieve net zero emissions sometime between 2030-2040. On top of this, we’ve seen significant legislation come into effect within the last few years to address sustainability concerns.

The Inflation Reduction Act is a prime example of this. The Inflation Reduction Act is a federal US law that aims to curb inflation through several avenues – one being investment in domestic energy production while promoting clean energy.

This is where sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) comes in. SAF has similar properties to conventional jet fuel. Depending on the feedstock technologies used, SAF can reduce lifecycle GHG emissions drastically.

A primary and ideal feedstock for SAF is wood biomass. This leads us to a few other questions to consider, such as:

  • How will the use of wood biomass for SAF impact raw material pricing for virgin pulp mills?
  • Will there be a new market for selling wastewood and wood-based by-products?

4. What major mergers and acquisitions have recently occurred in the industry?

The industry continues to experience frequent merger and acquisition activity. Fisher tracks the significant M&A by region and explains the impact on local markets.
