In a significant move towards sustainable food packaging, Stora Enso is set to launch a state-of-the-art consumer board production line at its Oulu Mill in Finland by 2025.

This innovative facility promises to reshape the landscape of food packaging, offering a perfect blend of quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

At the heart of Stora Enso's technological leap is the patented FiberLight TecTM fiber treatment technology. This groundbreaking innovation allows for the creation of lighter boards without compromising on strength or stiffness.

Malin E. Strömberg, Technical Product Manager & Product Development Manager at Stora Enso, explains, "The board becomes more than 5 percent lighter than it would be without the treatment. This benefits our customers, as their packaging becomes lighter, which means they can produce the same amount of packaging with less material and lower emissions, also during transport."

The technology combines chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) to achieve optimal strength with less fiber, resulting in significant material efficiency.

Complementing the FiberLight TecTM technology is Stora Enso's investment in a highly efficient production line. Designed to be the most competitive folding box board machine in Europe, the new line boasts:

  • Excellent heat recovery systems
  • Low CO2 emissions
  • Minimal water usage
  • High resource efficiency

This combination of features ensures the production of top-quality boards with excellent stiffness, smoothness, and printability, all while minimizing environmental impact.

With these advancements, Stora Enso is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable food packaging solutions. The company's focus on lightweight, high-quality, renewable, and recyclable materials aligns perfectly with the growing demand for environmentally responsible packaging in the food industry.

As the world moves towards more sustainable practices, Stora Enso's innovations at the Oulu Mill represent a significant step forward in reducing the environmental footprint of food packaging while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Stora Enso, a global leader in the bioeconomy, specializes in renewable products for packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction. As one of the world's largest private forest owners, the company envisions a future where tree-based materials replace fossil-based products. With 20,000 employees and EUR 9.4 billion in 2023 sales, Stora Enso's shares are traded on Nordic and US stock exchanges.
