Trois-Rivières will see a new $16-million recycling facility as Kruger consolidates its operations in the Mauricie region, aiming to strengthen fibre supply for its containerboard mill and reduce transportation emissions.
The site, located in the Pointe-du-Lac district, will cover one million square feet — about 13 football fields — and bring together Kruger Recycling’s collection and storage activities. Positioned near Kruger Packaging’s containerboard mill, Québec’s largest recycler of paper and paperboard, the new centre will help secure a steady stream of recycled fibre for production.
Focus on regional integration
The facility is expected to reinforce Trois-Rivières’ role in Québec’s recycling sector. It will receive material not only from Mauricie, but also from other parts of Québec, eastern Ontario, and the northern United States. By situating the centre close to its main mill, Kruger anticipates lowering greenhouse gas emissions linked to transportation.
“We already recycle 100% of the paper and paperboard collected from residential blue bins in Trois-Rivières,” said Stéphanie Bouchard, General Manager of Recycled Fibres and Biomass at Kruger Recycling. “By consolidating operations near our main customer, we can also expand collection routes with businesses and stores.”
Part of a longer investment trend
Kruger has a long history in recycling, producing 100% recycled containerboard since the 1960s. In 2017, the company invested more than $250 million to modernize its Gene H. Kruger Boulevard mill, enabling it to focus on lightweight and high-strength linerboard.
The new facility represents another step in Kruger’s strategy to vertically integrate its Québec operations, giving the company more control over fibre supply. The Trois-Rivières containerboard mill alone recycles around 450,000 tonnes of paper and old corrugated containers every year.
About Kruger Recycling
Kruger Recycling collects and processes more than 750,000 tonnes of paper and paperboard annually in Québec, with facilities in Greater Montréal, Estrie, and Mauricie.
