Billerud Paper Mill Escanaba has announced plans to temporarily lay off an unspecified number of employees during a planned maintenance outage in the first week of October.

The decision comes in response to reduced paper demand and the need to manage inventory levels efficiently. Following the maintenance work, the company intends to observe an additional week of market-driven downtime to align production with customer requirements.

The precise count of affected employees remains undisclosed, and ongoing discussions with unions and employees aim to minimize the impact as much as possible. The Escanaba Mill currently employs over 800 individuals.

Billerud temporarily suspended operations of Escanaba Mill Operations for four weeks this spring in a precautionary move to safeguard the health and safety of its employees and contractors in response to an outbreak of blastomycosis fungal infection.
