Metsä Fibre has announced a temporary production shutdown at its Joutseno pulp mill starting Monday, June 9.

The decision comes in response to declining order volumes from Asia and ongoing market uncertainty. “This temporary shutdown enables us to adjust our pulp inventory levels,” said Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsä Fibre.

The duration of the shutdown remains open-ended, with the company monitoring market conditions closely. Metsä Fibre noted that wood supply and operational readiness are in place for a swift restart once conditions improve.

Residents near the mill may notice occasional odor nuisance during the pause in production, the company added.

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, produces pulp, sawn timber, and a range of bioproducts such as bioenergy and biochemicals, emphasizing alternatives to fossil-based materials. In 2024, Metsä Fibre recorded €2.3 billion in sales and employed about 1,500 people.
