Metsä Board, a subsidiary of Metsä Group, has unveiled an enhanced version of its flagship folding boxboard product, MetsäBoard Classic FBB.
Known for its lightweight design, stiffness, and stable quality, the upgraded board now boasts improved printability and a reduced carbon footprint, reinforcing its position as a leader in food and healthcare packaging.
The improvements are the result of a €60 million modernization project at the Simpele mill in Finland. By integrating advanced curtain and blade coating technologies, the new MetsäBoard Classic FBB delivers brighter and more vivid images with enhanced visual uniformity. “This marks a new era in folding boxboard,” said Maarten Florizoone, Vice President of Growth at Metsä Board. The upgraded product is set to expand its applications to more demanding print jobs, helping brands stand out on shelves.
Sustainability remains central to Metsä Board’s operations. The Simpele mill already operates with 89% fossil-free energy, a figure expected to rise to 98% by the end of 2025. This aligns with the company’s broader goal of achieving fossil-free production across all mills by 2030. Florizoone emphasized the importance of these advancements: “Our efforts not only reduce our own emissions but also help customers lower their Scope 3 CO2 emissions.”
Construction at the Simpele mill is underway, with technology installation planned during a maintenance shutdown in September 2025. The improved MetsäBoard Classic FBB will be available to customers starting October 2025.
Metsä Board, a part of Metsä Group, specializes in lightweight, high-quality folding boxboards, food service boards, and white kraftliners, utilizing renewable and traceable fresh wood fibers from Northern European forests. The company aims for completely fossil-free mills and raw materials by 2030.
