International News

UPM Specialty Papers has achieved recyclability certifications for its packaging papers under both European and U.S. standards, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable packaging solutions.

The company’s barrier papers, barrier base papers, and flexible packaging papers successfully passed the new CEPI recyclability test, meeting the CEPI-Scorecard version 2.0 (January 2025) standards.

Certified Papers and CEPI Standards

The CEPI certification confirms that UPM’s packaging papers can be processed in conventional recycling mills. The certified papers include:

  • Barrier papers: UPM Asendo™, UPM Asendo™ Pro, UPM Confidio™, UPM Confidio™ Pro

  • Barrier base papers: UPM Prego™, UPM Solide™ Lucent

  • C1S packaging papers: UPM UniquePack™, UPM UniquePack™ Strong, UPM FlexPack™

“The CEPI results demonstrate the robustness of our papers’ recyclability, allowing converters to enhance performance with additional coatings without compromising recyclability,” said Janne Varvemaa, Director, Products and Technology, UPM Specialty Papers.

Compliance with EU and U.S. Standards

With the EU’s new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requiring all packaging to be recyclable by 2030, UPM’s certified papers align with the regulation’s objectives. Additionally, UPM’s packaging papers comply with the European recyclability method PTS RH 021/97 Cat II, ensuring compatibility with existing fibre recycling streams.

In the U.S., UPM’s packaging papers have been certified recyclable through the WMU SBS-E Recyclability Certificate method. The certified papers for the U.S. market include:

  • UPM Asendo™, UPM Prego™, UPM Solide™ Lucent, UPM UniquePack™, UPM UniquePack™ Strong, and UPM FlexPack™
