Ahlstrom, a global specialist in fiber-based materials, has unveiled MasterTape® Cristal, a groundbreaking paper-based transparent tape backing designed to reduce plastic usage in packaging and everyday applications.

Currently, approximately 80% of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes are made from plastic. Ahlstrom’s innovation offers a renewable alternative with comparable strength, transparency, and performance, making it suitable for diverse uses such as gift wrapping, packaging, and office tasks.

The fiber-based tape backing is recyclable according to EN13430 standards and compostable under EN13432 guidelines, addressing the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to plastic while helping reduce environmental impact.

"MasterTape® Cristal is a result of extensive collaboration with customers and suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability," said Laurent Lebrette, Head of R&D for Ahlstrom’s Tape business. Early feedback has been enthusiastic, with schools, offices, and retailers praising its balance of environmental benefits and reliability.

Sebastien Ferrari, Product Manager for Ahlstrom’s Tape business, emphasized the innovation’s significance. "This product represents a breakthrough in transitioning from plastic to paper for transparent materials. It’s a solution developed alongside our customers to reduce climate impact, particularly Scope 3 emissions."
