Pulpex, the innovative startup behind biodegradable cellulose-based bottles, has announced plans to build its first commercial manufacturing plant near Glasgow, Scotland.

The project is supported by a successful USD 75 million Series D investment round, led by the UK's National Wealth Fund and the Scottish National Investment Bank, with continued backing from CMPC Ventures.

The new facility, scheduled to begin operations in 2026, will have a production capacity of up to 40 million bottles per year. It will serve as the cornerstone for establishing the UK’s first fiber bottle supply chain—a major milestone in scaling sustainable packaging solutions. Pulpex’s patented technology allows for the production of recyclable and biodegradable bottles that can enter existing paper and cardboard recycling streams, offering an alternative to traditional plastic and glass containers.

CMPC Ventures, which first invested in Pulpex in early 2023, reaffirmed its support during this latest financing round. "CMPC Ventures has just reaffirmed its commitment to supporting companies that are leading the charge toward a more sustainable future with innovative solutions coming from the wood and paper industry," said Bernardita Araya, Manager of CMPC Ventures. "This investment strengthens the tracking and support for Pulpex during the scaling phase in order for its market position to continue growing stronger."

Pulpex CEO Scott Winston praised the collaboration: "Having a long-standing, dynamic partner with its own operations helps us grow and achieve our global goals in terms of scale and impact. CMPC Ventures has always been a perfect fit with our professional ethos and drive for success."

Currently operating out of Sawston, UK, Pulpex collaborates with major global consumer brands such as Diageo, PepsiCo, Unilever, and Kraft Heinz to develop sustainable packaging alternatives.
