Norwegian kitchen appliance manufacturer Wilfa and Stora Enso's Papira® have joined forces to create an innovative, sustainable packaging solution for the ProBaker kitchen mixer.

This partnership showcases how eco-friendly materials can meet high standards of design, quality, and protection.

Wilfa, known for its commitment to environmental responsibility, sought a sustainable packaging alternative for their ProBaker mixer without compromising on protective features or design. Arnt Sandvik Nilsen, Category Director at Wilfa, stated, "When Stora Enso reached out to us with Papira®, we found this to be a perfect match for the ProBaker"

Stora Enso developed protective inserts for the Wilfa ProBaker using a combination of Papira® and corrugated board. Papira®, a bio-based and biodegradable foam made from wood fibers sourced from sustainably managed forests, is fully recyclable within standard paper and board recycling streams. This wood-based solution offers high shock-absorbing qualities, ensuring superior protection for the sophisticated 15 kg ProBaker.

The new packaging design has yielded significant improvements:

  • Passed the ISTA 3A drop test
  • Reduced foam usage by 50%
  • Decreased overall box volume by 11%
  • Lowered logistics costs and emissions
  • Provided a mono-material solution for easy recycling

Kristīne Biteniece, Packaging designer at Stora Enso, emphasized, "This is a beautiful example of how designing packaging with Papira® can elevate the unboxing experience and provide protection during transit''.

Stora Enso is currently working on scaling Papira® from pilot to industrial production. The collaboration with Wilfa serves as a prime example of sustainable packaging solutions in the electrical appliances industry.

Stora Enso is a major player in renewable solutions for packaging, biomaterials, and wood construction, and is among the world’s largest private forest owners. With 20,000 employees globally and sales of EUR 9.4 billion in 2023, the company is listed on both Nasdaq Helsinki and Nasdaq Stockholm.
