As we reviewed in our last OEE post “Would you like to improve the OEE of your paper and board sheeting or winding machine?”, OEE means Overall Equipment Effectiveness, and this takes into consideration the availability, performance, and quality of the manufacturing process. The higher OEE percentage, the higher effectiveness your machine has.
In the previous post about OEE we pointed out the overall definition of this concept. Now, we will make three subsections dedicated to improving the availability, performance and quality of the machine. In this case, we will focus on availability.
To measure a sheeter's or winder’s Availability ratio, you must divide your actual run time by the potential fully scheduled time. Do you need to slow down the machine to do setup work? How often does this happen? If you feel related to these questions, you may probably need to improve the availability of your paper & board converting machine.
When it comes to a sheeter, for example, upgrading the core removal and make it fully automatic could avoid slowing down the machine in order to do that setup work that we mentioned before. This is one of the multiple upgrade examples that could help you increase the availability of your machine.
Similar issues also happen with winders. The mother reel splice, for example, it is often done manually and extra resources are frequently used for that purpose. Automating that process would mean saving a lot of time and resources for every splice.
